Tea with Jesus

Updated: Dec 11, 2020

There is nothing in this world like time with Jesus.

Imagine yourself sitting comfortably on your sofa with a warm cup of tea in hand. Your Bible or devotional in your lap, a single candle warmly flickering nearby.

And Jesus sitting next to you.

My dear friend Krista shared the details of her daily ritual with me. She does it every day, morning and evening, and dubbed it "Tea with Jesus."

She knows how vital it is for her recovery, mental health, spirituality, and growth to routinely spend time getting close to God, nurturing a very intimate and raw relationship with Him.

She told me something I'll never forget. She said that before she puts her feet on the floor in the morning, she asks God to be a part of her day.

It is a personal invitation rather than an assuming expectation.

When she wakes and before she goes to bed, she lights one single candle in front of her on the coffee table, she turns her fireplace on, and she has a spot on her sofa reserved solely for Jesus.

She drinks her tea which is a direct parallel to the candle she has lit: warm, simple, cozy, welcoming, and hospitable. The flame of the candle reminds her to focus on one thing only and clear out distractions, returning to focus on it when her minds starts to wander. It is a symbol that God is the light of her life, and this precious connection is only a match away. It is right there for her whenever she needs it.

It gives her a beautiful sense of a loving Father/daughter relationship in the midst of this world's chaos.

It is intentional time. She consciously lights the candle and begins the conversation. She mindfully extinguishes the flame. God simply meets her there.

She is a fierce and strong mentor. She exemplifies everything I want to be as a Christian women in this life.

She doesn't just say the words, she lives them.

Her faith and utter adoration of Jesus drew me in like a beacon at a point when I was living in despair. From the very moment she introduced herself to me, I knew I was in the presence of a woman who was 100% authentic, unashamed of her beliefs, and would love on anyone who was lucky enough to enter her orbit.

When you encounter people you want to emulate, you take very specific notes on who they surround themselves with and how they spend their time. When I met Krista, I wanted what she had. I yearned for a raw connection to God that a lifetime of church-going and religion classes had not yet given me. I needed it to be personal.

She had that. And she showed me how to find it for myself.

Thank you, amazing lady, for walking with me in my journey. For shining the light of Jesus for me when I was stumbling around in the dark. For anchoring me to the Truth. For living your life in such a way that all those around you can't help but see Jesus through you.

Thank you for leading me to my own couch, for my own conversation, for my own

Tea with Jesus.

Note: Surround yourself with Christian friends. Their strength, support, and unconditional love is paramount to growing in your faith.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them fall down, one can help the other up. But pity the anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Ecclesiates 4:9-10

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:17

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24
