Picturesque and Historic Downtown | New Ulm, Minnesota
Updated: Dec 11, 2020
The charming city of New Ulm, Minnesota, set in the tree-lined and scenic river valley, was founded in 1854 by a group of German-Americans who wanted to preserve their German heritage. The city was named after the city of Ulm in southern Germany.
Strolling the streets downtown, there are photo ops at every glance. Beautiful buildings, creatively painted fire hydrants, flower pots and bistro tables, and ornate doorways.
As we walked by, an artist was working on a massive "Follow Your Bliss" mural. Young families were out enjoying the morning with their littles. Shop owners were prepping for Saturday business. Everyone was smiling. It seemed like the summer sunshine had the same effect on us all.
There are many staples in a very concentrated space. The Backerei: a beloved bakery and coffee shop and Lamplighter and Kaiserhoff: hometown favorites.
A vibrant and quaint community, rich in history, this southern Minnesota town is worthy of a day trip if you are ever in the area!
